Egg Handling & Safety

Our eggs are fresh, locally collected, and handled with care. Proper storage and handling are important to maintain quality and safety.

Unwashed vs Washed Eggs

Unwashed eggs retain their natural protective coating (called the bloom), which seals the shell and helps prevent bacteria from entering the egg. This natural barrier allows unwashed eggs to maintain quality and freshness for a longer period of time.

When eggs are washed, this protective bloom is removed. Without it, the shell becomes more porous and vulnerable, making it easier for bacteria and contaminants to enter. For this reason, any egg that has been washed must be refrigerated immediately and handled with extra care to maintain safety and freshness.

When to Wash & Storage Guidelines

Eggs should only be washed right before use. Washing too early removes the egg's natural protection and increases the risk of contamination if not stored properly.

  • · Unwashed eggs may be kept at room temperature for short periods, but refrigeration is recommended for best quality and extended shelf life
  • · Washed eggs must always be refrigerated immediately
  • · Always store eggs in a clean, dry environment and avoid temperature fluctuations

How to Wash Eggs

Eggs should be washed gently and only right before use.

  • · Use warm water (slightly warmer than the egg)
  • · Gently rub off any visible dirt with your hands or a soft cloth
  • · Do not soak eggs, as this can allow water and bacteria to enter through the shell
  • · Do not use soap or chemicals, as eggshells are porous and can absorb residues
  • · Dry the eggs thoroughly with a clean towel or paper towel

Once washed, eggs must be refrigerated immediately and should not be left at room temperature.

Shelf Life

  • · Unwashed refrigerated eggs: up to 3 months
  • · Unwashed eggs stored at room temperature: 2–4 weeks
  • · Washed refrigerated eggs: 2–3 months

For best quality and safety, refrigeration is recommended whenever possible.

Food Safety

Always cook eggs thoroughly before consumption. Consuming raw or undercooked eggs may increase the risk of foodborne illness, especially for children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
